as the career hangs in the balance

as the career hangs in the balance
and the band takes the stage
i stand back in my basement
and start to feel my age
my uncle says life is short
you can't dare turn back time
says it like i dont know
its been written into rhyme
aunt comes down after many years
and sees her dear sister
been awhile since she's been around
i could probably admit i missed her
and my sisters around yelling at folk
then goes straight to bed
heart certainly cold as ice
snoring as soon as she's fed
my dad holds it all together with skill
even got late for work
but he drove down to cincy none the less
never a visible jerk
mom was glad her familys around
a rare treat for her
she moved away from chicago's comfort
now living in the sticks as it were
and anita taking many photographs
capturing every face
she's gotten quite good with the point and click
does it with style and grace
we saw the museum where the aircraft are kept
and stood next to world war two fighters
the sights were immense and the scale amazing
in the end food for this writer
a brownie sits next to my arm
and tastes rather stale
but the sweet taste is a welcome one
although if compared this taste pales
and cookies on the desk bought days ago
with rasberry sauce all over
taste real sweet perhaps too much so
but anitas found a dough and sugar lover
the lightning strike brought an end to the tree
as it lay flat on the ground
men came with axes and took it away
no more leaves to make wind sound
